Staying and Aging at Home

Staying at Home

From birth, we are constantly growing and changing. We have different successes and challenges at each stage and we need to acknowledge that we have to accommodate our environment for those challenges. Most of us want to remain independent and in our own homes. With a few modifications to our homes, we can be safe and comfortable.

Some of these changes are:

  • Install grab bars in the shower and tub and near the toilet
  • Remove throw rugs to prevent trip hazards
  • Keep exterior walk ways clear of obstacles

A Senior Real Estate Specialist can help you with some of these general suggestions. Check also with your family and, if you have one, your home health aide. The most important thing to maintaining your independence is to have a safe home. Check out the checklist below. Print it out and make your home safe!

Decluttering and Downsizing

You may be ready to move from the family home into a new home better suited to your life-style. The kids are grown and raising families of their own and perhaps you don’t need all those extra bedrooms and blankets. Maybe, you want to be in a community of people your own age and participate in outings and activities with your peers. Maybe, you want a smaller yard, or no yard. What ever the reason, the time may come where you are ready to right-size your home to suit your needs.

So what do you do with all your stuff? A lifetime of special things with familial memories. The china you were gifted on your wedding day that adorned your table for every holiday, anniversary, and special occasion. Your son’s old clarinet. Your daughter’s prom dress. Holiday decorations, and trinkets from vacations. It can seem overwhelming and emotional. Here is a checklist that can help. Download it and print it out.
